Burwood Chess Challenge 2017

Date:
Tuesday, 4th July 2017
Venue:

Club Burwood RSL - Entertainment Dome
96 Shaftesbury Road, Burwood
(5 minutes walk from Burwood Station)

Tournament:

256 players competed in this year's annual Burwood Chess Challenge, held on Tuesday 4th July.  It was a fairly strong field with top seeds Peter Boylan and Daniel Melamed rated over 900 JCL, and we had 20 players rated over 600.

By lunchtime, after 4 rounds, there was still a big tie between 12 players on maximum points.  The top players all knocked each other off until only 3 players were on 6/6 - Peter, Daniel and 4th seed Michael Parsons.  Perhaps Michael was lucky to avoid Peter in the penultimate round, as after Peter defeated Daniel, he was obliging and took a risk-free draw in the last round.  This left Peter and Michael tied for first place on 7.5/8.  Congratulations to Peter Boylan, who took the 1st place trophy with the highest tiebreak.  Peter will have his name engraved on the big silver cup.
