Tournament:

It was a scorching day of competition at the Xmas Swiss Chess Challenge 2014 with 220 players sweating it out over the board in their attempt to win trophies and medals.  Most of the players had ratings, and 24 of those were over 500.  8 rounds were played throughout the day and the eventual winner was Max Mikkelsen, who lead the tournament all the way and finished undefeated with 7.5 points.  Our hearty congratulations to Max!

There was a big tie for second place on 7 points, between the unrated 17-year-old Jay Scott, Gordon Yang, Peter Boylan, Sebastian Bracks and Marsel Garipov.  Unfortunately Marsel lost his first round, so his tiebreak was lower than the others, meaning that Marsel missed out on a trophy and received a medal instead.

Thanks to the Sydney Latvian Society Club for again providing an excellent venue, capable of comfortably seating players and parents.  Thanks also to all of the Sydney Academy of Chess arbiters for making sure the event was on time and ran smoothly without any major disputes.
