Inner West Chess Challenge 23

Date:
Tuesday, 2nd October 2018

Tournament:

202 players competed in our first event in the Spring Holidays - the biannual Inner West Chess Challenge, held at the Sydney Latvian Society Club in Strathfield.  There were a number of high school students who entered, making this a very strong event.  Top seeds were Fallon Fotaras (rated 765), Sayum Rupasinghe (748) and Jason Pan (740).  It is always pleasing to see that 80 unrated players took part, which generally means that have are new to competitive chess, or have only a little tournament experience.

At lunchtime, after 5 rounds had been played out of 8 in total, we had 5 players still on a perfect score - Fallon, Jason, as well as Georgios Andromedas, Joshua Li and Jacob Camilleri.  As is necessary in a Swiss style competition, the top players knocked each other down from their perfect streaks until only Georgios remained on 7/7 going into the last round.

He remained triumphant against his last opponent, Joshua Li, so was the only player to finish on 8/8.  Congratulations, Georgios!  His name will be added, along with all of the previous winners, onto the big silver cup.

Sydney Academy of Chess would like to thank the Latvian Club again for providing the hall, the arbiters and helpers who made this event a big success, to all of the parents for spending their time during the school holidays to support their children, and to the players for trying their best and competing with good sportsmanship and fair play.
