Tournament:

By the shore of Brisbane Waters 42 young chess enthusiasts gathered to test themselves and each other in the greatest contest of the minds. They travelled from all Newcastle, Sydney and all across the Central Coast to the Gosford Scout Hall. Seven rounds of chess was played with all players competing in every round.

The top seed, Sydney player Angus Cheng, looked on course to dominate for the first four rounds. However, from round five the locals showed their class and he didn’t win another game.

The top place was shared by Ben Farr (Tuggerah) and Daniel Sheedy (Newcastle), with Daniel being awarded first place on tie break. Third through fifth place were all Central coast locals Patrick Triggell, Gregory Shevchenko and Abdullah Mohammad.

There were also trophies awarded for the best in certain age groups and the best female player. The top two age group prizes were won by Sydney players, 12/11 year old Stanley Tang, 10/9 year old Daniel Goris. The best 8/7 year old was Lachlan Peers from The Entrance, the best 6 years and under was Ethan Cooney from Bateau Bay and the best female player was Abbey Wardrope from Tuggerawong.
