Inner West Chess Challenge 13

Date:
Tuesday, 24th September 2013

237 players, aged from 5 up to 17, started the Inner West Chess Challenge 13 held at the Sydney Latvian Society Club in Strathfield on Tuesday 24th September.  About half the field was unrated and it was a gruelling long day for the first-timers - in the end there were still 230 players who survived the whole day and competed in the final (8th) round.

It was a tough competition in the front row of tables, with the top 14 seeds (rated over 600) knocking each other off from round 5 onwards.  Only William Tao managed to keep a perfect score after 7 rounds, however he was eventually toppled in the exciting last round by the tournament winner Raymond Li who scored 7.5 points from 8 games.  This is Raymond's second Inner West Chess Challenge victory, also winning the 11th version held in September, 2012.  Congratulations on another fine victory, Raymond!

There are many people to thank, who help make this bi-annual event happen: thanks to the Sydney Latvian Society Club, who provide the excellent venue which can fit up to 300 players, the Sydney Academy of Chess arbiters, LaQ for providing extra prizes in the form of building block sets, and the canteen staff for serving sandwiches, snacks and drinks all day.  Thank you also to the parents who supported and drove their children to the event, and to all the players who conducted themselves very well with good sportsmanship and respectful behaviour.

Our next major event will be the Xmas Swiss Chess Challenge to be held on Sunday 24th November, 2013.  We hope to see you all again then!
